Wally traces his curly ancestry through his grandsire, Colonel Austin, to the Arabian stallion Nevada Red, who was extensively bred to wild-caught curly mustang mares on the Damele ranch to create many of the American Baskir curly horse bloodlines existing today. Through his dam, Wally traces his ancestry to the Fredell ranch curly mustang/quarter horse breeding program in Colorado and also, Damele's Nevada Red.

I can count on Wally to wake me up with his 'feed me...and by the way, good morning' roar at the pasture gate every morning. He's more reliable than any alarm clock. Wally is the ultimate people horse and he especially loves children. He always takes good care of his passengers. I've used him to give 'pony rides' to children as young as 3 years old, my teenage nieces, and my sister. He's just as good at being a nanny for foals and young horses. He'll patiently stand very still while confused weanlings try to nurse or pull at his tail, but he's also an excellent teacher when they need to learn their herd manners. He quickly corrects them if they act rudely towards me, too.

Wally's not the most coordinated trail horse. He's better suited for flat bridle paths and arena work. However, on our first trail ride he certainly took care of me when his new saddle slid over his withers and then slowly turned over, heading for his belly. We were on the side of a mountain on a rocky trail at the time. Most horses would have freaked out and seriously hurt both of us. Wally stopped and stood absolutely still while I slid with the saddle under his belly and carefully dropped between the rocks to the ground. No matter what silly thing Wally might do on occasion, he earned my trust forever that day!
